Now Kit Siang calls Khairy a ‘rabid racist’

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 — DAP’s Lim Kit Siang today hit back at Khairy Jamaluddin for calling him a “borderline racist” by pointing out that even former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was opposed to the aborted Umno-PAS unity talks.

“I think Khairy wanted to call Dr Mahathir a ‘borderline racist’ but dare not do so, and is using this way to hit out at the former prime minister,” said Lim in his latest blog posting.

He added that Dr Mahathir had repeated his opposition to any Umno-PAS Malay unity government talks at the Pandan Umno division motivational course on Saturday.

On Saturday, Umno Youth chief Khairy defended the aborted unity talks between Umno and PAS, and called Lim a “borderline racist” for his criticism.

Khairy had said that Lim's accusation that the proposed dialogue between Umno and PAS was against the concept of 1 Malaysia shockingly implied that Malay-Muslim unity was not good for the country.

Last week, Lim challenged what he felt was the absurdity of Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s call for Malay and Muslim unity, and mocked the prime minister by asking if Umno would give the nod to Chinese unity talks or similar discourse for other communities as well.

Pakatan Rakyat (PR) leaders have already rejected Umno’s unity government proposal and proclaimed all issues surrounding the fiasco, which brought the fledgling opposition coalition to the brink of collapse, resolved.

But the Umno president, in asking PAS not to reject a proposal which he said would be beneficial to Malay Muslims, had appeared to play the religion and race card.

In his blog posting, Lim said Khairy’s allegation was laughable as the Umno Youth chief had made an uncalled-for attack on the Indian community during a live telecast at the Umno General Assembly in November 2007 and because of his infamous outburst about the alleged marginalisation of the Malays in Penang.

“So long as Khairy can continue to play with impunity his role as a rabid racist, the prime minister’s 1Malaysia concept as a unifying force for all Malaysians regardless of race will remain suspect.”

Meanwhile Lim said he was also taking the fresh promise of merit-based national scholarships with a “heavy pinch of salt”.

Najib had on Saturday night announced a new category of Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships which will start from next year.

“The scholarships based purely on merit and regardless of race are welcomed,” said Lim.

But heis sceptical because of repeated disappointments with previous promises of “meritocracy” by the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

Firstly, he said six years ago, Malaysians were promised a system of “meritocracy” in the annual intake of university students but this proved to be a “fraudulent” meritocracy.

There continues to be two incomparable university entrance examinations, the world-class two-year Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) and the inferior one-year matriculation course, he said.

Lim said if the government really wanted to stop the fall in standards in public universities, only the best lecturers and students must be recruited.

He said the first step was to have one common university entrance examination along with a programme of positive affirmation to ensure those from a socio-economically backward background get special assistance to get into universities but based on need and not race.

Secondly, he said the government gave assurances last year that 20 per cent or 400 out of the 2,000 PSD scholarships for foreign universities this year would be allocated solely on merit.

Lim said this has turned out to be an empty promise as many SPM top scorers with 11 to 16As denied were denied these scholarships.

He said any scepticism about the new PSD scholarship would be understandable because of the absence of a genuine 1 Malaysia mindset where all Malaysians regardless of race get equal treatment. - MalaysianInsider

DAP wants Umno to stop sending sending mixed signals on race and quotas

UALA LUMPUR, June 28- The DAP backs Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s reform plans but is concerned with the administration’s mixed signals on Malay rights.

Tony Pua, the party’s national publicity secretary, pointed out that while the prime minister spoke last night about removing quotas and merit-based national scholarships his deputy had promised on the same day that “Umno would fight to the last drop of blood to protect Malay rights”.

He said that although the DAP welcomes Najib’s announcement in Putrajaya last night, Barisan Nasional (BN) should stop the policy of divide and rule among Malaysians of all races.

During the dinner hosted by the MCA and the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ACCCIM), Najib acknowledged that the quota system was flawed and did not benefit Bumiputeras.

Datuk Seri Muhyiddin Yassin was present at the same dinner but according to Pua, he had stirred up Malay racial sentiments in his speech earlier in Pagoh, Johor.

“Taken together with the Prime Minister’s own persistence in Malay-Muslim unity talks with PAS, it raises the question as to whether BN is continuing the policy of “singing a different song to a different racial audience”.

He said this flies in the face of the 1 Malaysia concept being preached by Najib.

Pua said that Umno continues to place Malay unity and Malay rights above all else under its “Ketuanan Melayu” banner while all other BN component parties and ethnic groups are subjugated to its authority.

However, he said the DAP was willing to fully support the prime minister to remove the inefficient and ineffective quota system and replace it with a policy which promotes meritocracy in all sectors including education and the economy.

The policy on meritocracy should be complemented with an affirmative

action policy based on needs and not race.

“We would fully support all efforts to improve the economic livelihood of all poor Bumiputeras and Malaysians.”

He agreed with the PM that the quota system under the New Economic Policy (NEP) has failed the Bumiputeras.

The NEP promotes a rent-seeking culture, cronyism and corruption while benefiting only those who are politically connected, he said.

“We call on the Prime Minister to put his words into action by delivering a ministerial statement in Parliament to call for the removal of the quota-based NEP.”- Malaysian Insider

Manek Urai Akan Melakar Sejarah Baru

(gambar - Lim bersalam dengan Menteri Besar Kelantan, Tok Guru Nik Aziz semalam)

MANEK URAI

”PAS kalah teruk, barulah (tinggallh) dua kerusi menang, satu kerusi mana? Manek Urai !

MACC mum on PKFZ probe, PAC to carry on

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) remained tight-lipped on its probe into the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) during its meeting yesterday with the Public Accounts Committee (PAC)

while PAC will continue its inquiry.

MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Ahmad Said Hamdan and its investigation director Datuk Mohd Shukri Abdul attended a closed-door meeting in parliament with PAC to answer questions on the anti-graft commission’s ongoing probe.

Met later, PAC member William Leong (Selayang-PKR) told reporters the two-hour meeting was “nothing very much” as Ahmad Said informed the parliamentary committee that MACC could not disclose information because the matter was “still under investigation”.

“Personally, I was disappointed with what I heard during the session,” Leong said, adding that MACC did not give any indication on the progress of its investigation.

While PAC was mindful not to disturb MACC’s investigations, it is the “watchdog for public funds” and is duty-bound to keep parliament and the public informed, Leong said.

“We hope MACC can carry out its investigations without fear or favour and that the culprits can be brought to book,” he said.

PAC chairman Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid, meanwhile, declined to comment on the meeting.

Leong also said MACC had the benefit of the recently released PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) audit report on the PKFZ project and several reports by the Auditor-General.

He added that MACC could also refer to the 2004 investigations by its predecessor, the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA), as the facts on the project during the early probe remained largely unchanged.

PAC suggested that MACC approach PwC and the Auditor-General for their input as well as find out why Dubai-based Jebel Ali Free Zone International (Jafzi) pulled out of the project, Leong said.

He said PAC’s next meeting would discuss whether to summon former transport ministers and former Port Klang Authority (PKA) officials to testify, as advocated by several PAC members.

“There are many questions to be answered, mainly on the letters issued by the former (transport) ministers, whether you call it letters of comfort or letters of guarantee,” Leong said.

During their tenure, former Transport Ministers Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik and Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy had signed support letters for the PKFZ project.

When asked, Leong declined to specify when PAC would table its findings to parliament because the committee “did not want to be bound by time”.

Meanwhile, PAC deputy chairman Dr Tan Seng Giaw (Kepong-DAP) said the committee would meet on Tuesday to decide whether to summon Attorney-General (AG) Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail.

Tan said this was in relation to the AG’s unheeded advice that the land in Pulau Indah, where PKFZ is located, be acquired via compulsory acquisition using the Land Acquisition Act 1960.

Asked if he was satisfied with MACC’s answers, Tan said: “We cannot be satisfied with something still going on.” - The Edge

PKFZ report out. Now what? — The Malaysian Insider

PKA chairman Datuk Lee Hwa Beng holding the PKFZ audit report during a press conference at the PKA office in Klang on Thursday.

MAY 28 - Beyond the facts, figures and fallacies sifted from the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) report today, one thing is clear. Laws were broken.

And the question now is, whether anyone will be held accountable?

Malaysia has a history of revelations, reports and resolutions with no action taken. Will the same happen in the case of the PKFZ where a RM2 billion project is now costing RM7.45 billion and could possibly balloon to RM12.5 billion if the Port Klang Authority (PKA) defaults on its loans.

In the PriceWaterhouseCooper Advisory Services (PwCAS) report, the auditors noted there was weak governance, weak project management, conflict of interest among board members and shareholders of related companies.

Basically, laws were broken, rules were not followed. There was on oversight when it came to oversight, so to speak.

But this is not new.

What is not new is also the time taken for the report prepared last February 3 to ever see the light of day. Or for the public allowed access to the report online at www.pka-report.com for two weeks until June 10.

Because the report implicates many people, some still in government., some retired.

PKA chairman Datuk Lee Hwa Beng, who will send the report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and Public Accounts Committee (PAC) for follow-ups, cautioned that the report was released on certain conditions that only the MACC can probe the matter further.

But follow-ups that flounder are also not new in the country.

Witness for example the highly-publicised thick report from the Royal Commission to Enhance the Operation and Management of the Royal Malaysia Police that was established on Feb 4, 2004.

Its most important recommendation for an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission was never followed-up. Only a watered down commission for all enforcement agencies.

Or for that matter The Royal Commission of Inquiry Into the V.K. Lingam Video Clip formed in late 2007 to investigate allegations of intervention in judicial appointments. It concluded that there was a case to answer for a few people.

No one has been indicted yet, let alone investigated for the matter.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, who has been under fire for the past 14 months for not revealing the report, said the government must act on the findings of the report to ensure the people's interest are fully protected.

Good words indeed.

One waits for it to matched in deeds, nothing less than the people who broke the laws get their just desserts.

Otherwise the PKFZ report will go the same way of other reports in the past. On the shelves, gathering dust. In the dusbin, forgotten until the next scandal hits the headlines.

Kit Siang questions Najib's interest in unity talk

NAJIB'S latest tango in the UMNO-PAS "unity government" talks highly suspect as its real motive is to split PAS and divide Pakatan Rakyat

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's latest tango in the UMNO-PAS "unity government" talks is highly suspect as its real motive is to split PAS and divide Pakatan Rakyat.

Najib said he believed PAS was sincere in wanting to form a unity government with UMNO as proposed by its president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and UMNO would not reject any co-operation that could bring benefit to the country.

Why has Najib suddenly warmed up to the idea of UMNO-PAS "unity government" when only three days earlier the Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy UMNO President, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had poured cold water on it, dismissing the proposal as unlikely to become a reality with differences within PAS itself and the Pakatan Rakyat parties.

Muhyiddin even said that UMNO was prepared to "to respond to the proposal if it was mutually beneficial but would not do so now. Until today, there is nothing concrete."

Why has the top UMNO leadership suddenly changed tack on this issue, if not to exploit what they perceived as opportunities to exploit differences and contradictions in PAS and Pakatan Rakyat.

What is the reaction of MCA, Gerakan, MIC and the other BN component parties to the idea of a "UMNO-PAS unity government" talks? Are they just simply dumb and irrelevant in the highest echelons of Barisan Nasional leadership?

DAP has made clear our position on any UMNO-PAS "unity government" talks and the Pakatan Rakyat leadership council will meet on Monday to hear Hadi's explanation on the issue.

I don't see MCA or Gerakan asking for an explanation from Najib on the proposed "UMNO-PAS unity government talks"! Why?

The media have been after me for my reaction to the press conference statement by PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustapha Ali that PAS will hold unity talks with UMNO only if the other two Pakatan Rakyat partners, PKR and DAP, are included in the talks.

I will await explanation of Mustapha's proposal at the Pakatan Rakyat leadership council meeting on Monday before reacting.

However, I will like to hear not only what Najib and other UMNO leaders have to say, but what MCA, Gerakan, MIC and other BN component parties have to say about Mustapha's proposal. Or are MCA, Gerakan, MIC and the other BN component parties not allowed to react before UMNO has decided on the line that must be adhered to by all in BN?

Low quits MCA

KUALA LUMPUR: Transparency International Malaysia president Paul Low has resigned as a life member of MCA, a day after he was criticised by DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang.

Lim had questioned Low's impartiality in his role as head of the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) corporate governance committee given his affiliations with MCA, which holds the transport portfolio in the cabinet.

Low stressed that his position and affiliations with MCA would not affect his impartiality in investigating the multi-billion ringgit PKFZ scandal, Malaysiakini cited the former MCA think-tank member as saying in a statement.

"I chose to accept the appointment to head the ad hoc committee because TI-Malaysia strongly believes that it can contribute significantly to improve the system of governance and integrity in government agencies such as PKFZ," he said.

Lim said on Wednesday that he had received emails expressing scepticism over the fact that the committee would be headed by Low.

Kit Siang's car tyres punctured outside Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR: A tyre of the car belonging to veteran Member of Parliament Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Ipoh Timur) parked at the MPs’ parking lot at Parliament building was delibrately punctured with a needle on Wednesday.

Lim, who raised the matter it at the Dewan Rakyat during the Question Time Thursday asked: “How can this act of sabotage happen at Parliament building?”

He said he planned to drive out for lunch at 1:15pm when he discovered that the rear left tyre had deflated.

An aide said he went to a nearby petrol station to inflate the tyre and returned to Parliament building after lunch.

However, he discovered the same tyre had deflated again at 4pm.

The car was then sent to a tyre shop where the needle hole was found near the rim of the tyre and not at the surface.

Lim said he was not going to lodge a police report but Parliament chief administrator Datuk Kamaruddin Baria has spoken to him about it.-The Star Online

Lagi PRK Sekiranya ADUN Jawi Didapati Menyeleweng

PULAU PINANG – Satu lagi Pilihanraya Kecil (PRK) mungkin diadakan sekiranya siasatan yang dibuat terhadap ADUN Jawi Tan Beng Huat membuktikan beliau melakukan penyelewengan

Akhbar tempatan kelmarin melaporkan, Ketua Bahagaian DAP Nibong Tebal, Teh Hock Yong, menuduh Tan melakukan penyelewengan berhubung penajaan RM2,000 untuk sebuah pertubuhan amal tempatan.

Buletinonline

Kit Siang says Malaysia heading for ‘failed state’ status

By Edward Cheah

PETALING JAYA, June 3 — DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang warns that Malaysia risks being a failed state under the Najib administration.

In a press statement, the former opposition leader blasted the government and blamed Umno cronyism for the collapse of the RM300 million Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium in Gong Badak.

“The collapse is the inevitable consequence of a system which gives premium to ‘know who’ than ‘know how’, the curse of Umno cronyism hiding under the guise of the NEP,” said Lim.

The Ipoh Timur MP claimed that the recently-completed stadium was a disaster waiting to happen, saying the collapse was a warning of a serious breakdown in standards that will stop Malaysia from realising Vision 2020.

He also mentioned many examples that included the recent Jaya Supermarket disaster where construction workers were killed when the building collapsed while they were carrying out demolition work that was not approved.

Then there was the inability of the police to stop the spread of violent crime caused by Ah Longs who have an underground network that rivals the police.

Lim said the list could go on and even cited that Kuala Lumpur was now ranked the fourth riskiest location in the world for outsourcing according to the “Black Book of Outsourcing”, with our neighbour Singapore topping this list.

DAP slams Mingguan Malaysia for calling non-Malays ‘Kaum Pendatang’

By Neville Spykerman

PETALING JAYA, June 1 — The DAP today slammed the Umno-owned Mingguan Malaysia for fueling racial discord by referring to non-Malays as ‘Kaum Pendatang’ or immigrants.

Petaling Jaya MP Tony Pua said the last time the issue was raised, a Chinese press reporter was detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA), although she was just reporting what was said by an Umno leader.

He was referring to Sin Chew journalist Tan Hoon Cheng was detained for over 24-hours last September after quoting Bukit Bendara Umno division chairman Datuk Ahmad Ismail, who made the remark during the Permatang Pauh by-election.

“Is there going to be equal treatment for Mingguan Malaysia?” he asked.

Pua said he is against the use of the ISA but wonders if authorities would take any action against the Sunday edition of Utusan Malaysia.

The column yesterday by Awang Selamat also asked if the sacrifice of Malays has been betrayed by non-Malays.

The article made reference to rights of citizenship given to non-Malays before independence, comparing Malaysia to other countries which according to the weekly had rejected their immigrant communities.

The article also quoted former MIC president Tun V.T Sambanthan who compared Malaysia to Burma where the Indian community had been forced out.

“Is this the 1 Malaysia which (Datuk Seri) Najib (Razak) is taking about,” he asked adding that it was more like a strategy of divide and rule. - MalaysianInsider

PKFZ: Kit Siang’s 3 questions for Tee Keat

PENANG, May 30 — The contents of the PwC investigative report on the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) has angered DAP leader Lim Kit Siang who says he is going to act on the prime minister's directive to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat that the MCA president answer all questions raised by any party pertaining to the report.

The federal lawmaker said in a statement to the press today that he felt "violated as a Malaysian citizen and parliamentarian" when he read the report and the thick appendices, and that the most vivid image in his mind was "rip-off".

The much-anticipated report has implicated several politicians from Barisan Nasional (BN) and says that the actual cost of the scandal-hit project could be more than six times its original RM2 billion price tag.

Lim said he was not going to limit himself when it comes to the directive from the top that Ong answer all questions.

"I have a series of questions and will today start with three," he said with a cheeky smile when speaking to reporters at a press conference at his house here.

The first question is why were the terms of reference of the PwC inquiry restricted to a review instead of an all-out investigation when Ong had promised a "tell all" in April last year, one month into his job as transport minister.

"Can Ong explain why he decided on such limited and restricted terms of reference deliberately excluding from the inquiry the conduct or misconduct of previous Transport Ministers Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik and Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy in the PKFZ scandal as well as not asking PwC to detect any wrongdoing or render advice?"

The second question is whether Ong also felt ""violated as a Malaysian citizen and parliamentarian" after reading the report.

"Does Ong agree that the PwC report has exposed not just a can of worms but a swamp of crocodiles snowballing from a RM1.8 billion scandal in 2002 under Datuk Seri Ling Liong Sik as transport minister to RM4.6 billion under Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy and now mushrooming into the astronomical figure of RM12.5 billion under his watch?"

The third question is whether Ong agrees that the scandal must not be allowed to become a bigger version of the RM2.5 billion Bumiputra Malaysia Finance scandal which Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said 25 years ago was a "heinous crime but without criminals."

Lim said that RM12.5 billion was enough to build 1,250 schools at RM10 million each, 312,500 low-cost houses at RM40,000 each or enough to put RM338 cash in the pockets of every single Malaysian.

"What is Ong going to do to book all those responsible, whether politicians named like Deputy Finance Minister Chor Chee Heung or those unnamed like Liong Sik, Kong Choy, BN backbencher club chairman Tiong King Sing or Semanta state assemblyman Abdul Rahman Palil."

Lim concluded by saying: "The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has kicked the ball to Ong. I hope Ong will not kick the ball to somebody else and make the prime minister look foolish by not answering all queries."

The Port Klang Authority (PKA) has submitted the report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency which said it will study the report and see if it had any new leads compared with its own investigative report done last year.

Chor has said he will be meeting Najib and Ong to explain his position. He had denied any conflict of interest as to his role in the PKFZ project.

The main developer, Kuala Dimensi Sdn Bhd, is considering legal action against either PKA, PwC or both.

PKA, however, has indemnified PwC of any legal liability arising from the report.
