KUALA LUMPR: Opposition stalwart Lim Kit Siang today continued his verbal tirade against Inspector-General of Police Musa Hassan over the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old schoolboy.
Apart from calling for a royal commission of inquiry, the DAP veteran also urged Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein to act against Musa over the latter's “threat”.
“This is a test whether Hishammuddin can be a strong home minister. If he is weak, then Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak must step in.
“There can be no place in the Najib administration for an IGP who publicly slaps the prime minister in the face by rubbishing the Najib slogan of 'People First, Performance Now',” he said.
In response to a question yesterday, Musa said: “Let the politicians say what they want but I want to know whether you want us to enforce the law or not? If not, I will ask my men not to stop dangerous drivers or act against illegal racers.”
Haniff Omar should head commission
Describing this as a “stupid” question, Lim said: “Of course, Malaysians want the police to uphold and enforce the law but this is no licence for trigger-happy shooting.”
Meanwhile, the DAP leader said the first step in restoring public confidence is to set up a royal commission to probe Aminulrasyid Amzah's death and all cases of fatal police shootings since 2005.
Lim wanted former IGP Haniff Omar to head the commission.
“It has been reported that there was an annual average of some 40 people fatally shot by the police in Malaysia when in England and Wales, there were only five deaths by police shootings per year, on average, in the last decade.
“The Haniff Omar commission should come out with recommendations to end such high rate of fatal police shootings,” he said.
