IPOH: Chinese voters in Kuala Terengganu will not be swayed by the hudud issue in the upcoming by-election, DAP vice-chairman M. Kulasegaran said.
They were mature enough to see that the issue was being played up by Barisan Nasional, he claimed.
“The matter has been debated many times over. There is nothing new to it,” he said Thursday after opening the DAP service centre of Jelapang assemblyman Hee Yit Foong.
Kulasegaran said that he respected PAS for wanting to implement hudud laws, and that Islam was the party’s aspiration.
“It is still subject to amendments to the Federal Constitution,” he however added, noting that PAS would not be able to get the two-thirds majority to amend the Constitution.
It had been reported that Chinese voters, constituting 11% of the electorate in the parliamentary seat, were crucial for Barisan to maintain the seat.
Kulasegaran, who is also Ipoh Barat MP, stressed that even if the hudud laws were to be implemented, the lifestyle of non-Muslims would not be affected.
“It is the party’s (PAS) stand. I respect them for their stand. It is their business,” he added.
