IGP Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar should not be troubled over calls for
the police to be transparent over the killings of 5 men in Penang.
People have been killed. Their families will want and deserve
answers. Is that too much to ask? Such is a natural consequence in cases
like these and there is really nothing wrong with it.
Nobody is demanding anything extraordinary from the police at this
stage. All that is sought for are answers over the manner in which the
police acted in this case. There should be no difficulty in responding
positively to these demands.
Khalid should take this as an opportunity to show that the police
did no wrong. If he is certain that his men acted strictly in line with
the standard operating procedures, then there is really nothing to fear.
Why not support the call for a formal inquiry instead to explain what
happened and why it is it happened the way it did?
It may also be pertinent to point out that it is for the
Attorney-General, and not Khalid as IGP, to decide whether or not a
formal inquiry should be held under the Criminal Procedure Code. So
Khalid cannot say he doesn't care. He must care. And he and his men must
be prepared to respond to queries if indeed a formal inquiry is called
into the matter in time to come.
